As you know, you are not assured of getting the exact price designated by the stop order. Stop-limit order enables you to stipulate the maximum or minimum price acceptable for purchase or sale. If the specialist cannot execute at that price or better, no transaction takes place.

hi all. i'm familiar with stop and limit orders, either to buy or sell. i'm not quite sure what a stop limit is, though. could someone please give me examples, for buying and selling. thanks, -Vince Stop limit means that the brocker will not trade the stock untill it reaches your 'stop limit'.   example I placed an order for webs @ stop limit buy for 4.87 it traded around 5.50 most of yesterday however dipped to 4.50, my broker was able to buy at 4.87 (not a very good price improvement) now I have a sell 'stop limit' at 8.50 (i think it will hit tommorrow or monday) so the broker will not sell untill the stock reaches 8.50. hi all. i'm familiar with stop and limit orders, either to buy or sell. i'm not quite sure what a stop limit is, though. could someone please give me examples, for buying and selling.  Vince, When you place a buy limit order you set the max amount you'll buy at When you place a sell limit order you set the min amount you'll sell at when you place a buy (sell) stop, after the price hits your stop price it becomes a market order. when you place a stop-limit, after the stop price is hit, it becomes a limit order. you enter a buy stop limit 20 and the stock hits 20, a stop order would become a market order and be filled at whatever the market was at.  The buy stop limit 20 order will be filled at 20 IF all other limit orders in front of you are filled and all market orders are filled and the stock can still be purchased for 20.  Thus the stock could trade at 20 all day and your stop-limit order may not be executed....either because of limit orders placed before yours or market orders. hope this helps pat stout

A stop order becomes a market order when the stop is hit.  A stop limit order becomes a limit order when the stop is hit.  For example, Sell xyz at 50 Stop Limit.  The stock trades at 50, then drops to 49 7/8, the stop limit would not execute because the stock was trading below the limit.  The buy limit is the same, in reverse. The stop and the limit can be at different prices.  Sell xyz at 50 stop limit 49.  The stock trades at 50 ticking off your stop, if the trade can be accomplished above 49 you will be executed. Say you own 100 sh of XYZ and if it goes as low as $28 you want to sell it, but you want to get at least 27 3/4 So you place a stop sell 28 limit 27/34 which gets converted to a limit order if XYZ reaches 28. A stop sell 28 gets converted to a market order if XYZ hits 28.
