NL Gold Gloves were announced today:  Mark Grace at 1B, Biggio at 2B, Larkin at SS, Caminiti at 3B, Mondesi, Grissom, in the OF (I forget the third OF); Charles Johnson at C, Maddux at P. Thoughts on these?  Is Biggio really teh best defensive 2B in the league?  I'd have thought Lemke or even Boone.  And though I have heard much said of errors being misleading, didn't Caminiti have an abnormally high number of those this year? Ken Caminiti finished off the season with 27 errors, which is quite a high number for him.  Possibly, Caminiti was affected by the strange phenomena at Jack Murphy that seems to doom infielders to defensive mediocrity, regardless of their credentials elsewhere.  But most of his errors were of the throwing variety.  Not too surprising, when you consider he was rifling shots across the diamond to Slow Eddie Williams instead of the excellent Jeff Bagwell. Many of his errors that I witnessed came on throws that, while they weren't brilliant, were certainly outs most of the time. Just another reason errors are the dumbest statistics in popular use. Thank you for your time dp

Thoughts on these?  Is Biggio really teh best defensive 2B in the league?  I'd have thought Lemke or even Boone. Biggio's DAs the last three years:                 Biggio          Lgue Avg. 1994            .622            .658  (he won a GG here too) 1993            .662            .669 1992            .636            .683 To answer your question,  I doubt it.  But hey,  Biggio is a much better defensive second _base_man than any converted catcher has a right to be,  and he sure can hit.  I'll bet Alomar wins the AL GG,  as he did last year. This makes me wonder.  How about a Nichols' law of 2B defense, Sherri?  It would be the opposite of the rule for catchers. Dave Geiser

Well, whom else should have won the NL 3B Gold Glove?  Matt Williams was out half the season.  (Granted, it didn't stop Ken Griffey Jr. in the AL.)  Chipper Jones made almost as many errors as Caminiti, and since he's a rookie, he didn't have an established defensive reputation. Vinny All-Star without a Glove Castilla? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (to quote everybody's favorite moron) Seriously, 3B in the NL is a pretty weak position at the moment. Several teams had platoons, others had p_layer_s on the way out, and there just aren't that many good choices.  I don't really have a problem with Caminiti winning the award this season.

Yep.  Ivan Rodriguez has won a gold glove every year since he entered the league.  (that's four).  Its too bad he's only 23 though.

| | This makes me wonder.  How about a Nichols' law of 2B defense, | Sherri?  It would be the opposite of the rule for catchers. | | Well, Joe Girardi's newfound glovework is proof of the NLoCD: he can't hit, | ergo... | | Besides the NLoCD, I'd like to see how many more rules we rsbb'ers can | come up with. My suggestion: | | The Huffer Corollary on Mediocre First _base_men (or Huffer's Curse?): the | worst thing that can happen to a team is a mediocre first _base_man signed to | a long-term contract. Obviously in reference to Wally Joyner with the | Angels, but plenty of other examples exist. How about Coleman's law of speed:  A p_layer_ who has no other redeeming qualities other than the fact that he can steal _base_s will always have a job in the Major leagues.
