r134a ac retrofit gm 95 Cavalier A/C dead HELP!
Hello all:   The a/c in my wifes 95 Cavalier (_base_ model/engine) has just died. All I get is warm air blowing out of vents. The compressor does not kick in anymore when we turn a/c switch on and off.    I have checked the fuse inside the car and it is ok. I checked the fuse inside the engine compartment, but it has no indicators to tell me if it's good or bad. So the question is whether or not there is an easy fix(CHEAP!) or am I stuck taking the car into the shop??    Any ideas/help will be greatly appreciated! Regards..Alf Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Your compressor and/or clutch could have seized, you could be low on freon, or you could have a bad pressure sender. (In about reverse cost order if you have R12) Pressure Switch -  $25-$50 Trace the freon lines back from the compressor. You should find a solenoid somewhere around the evaporator canister. This is usually the pressure sending switch. Disconnect the wires from it and short them while the AC is running full blast. If the clutch kicks in on the AC this indicates either low freon or bad sending switch

Most likely you have a leak somewhere in the system allowing the freon to escape to the atmosphere.  When this hapens, the HVAC low pressure cutout switch comes into play, disabling the compressor to avoid damage. If you are real lucky, all that is leaking is an o-ring seal, at worst an evaporator or condensor has a hole in it.  In either case, take it to your local auto repair facility and have them leak test the system.
